VP Academic - Gage Desteur

Introduction

My name is Gage Desteur and I’m your VP Academic for the 2022-2023 Academic year. I am also going into my fourth year of a Bachelor of Management with a major in General Management and a double minor in Supply Chain Management & Economics. Although I am going into my fourth year, I started my university journey in the Fall of 2017. When I first came to the University of Lethbridge, I struggled a lot with making friends and keeping up with my classes. I was doing so poorly, academically, that I received a letter in the mail stating that I was required to withdraw from my program. Thankfully at that moment, I chose to persevere and continue with University. I enrolled in open studies and worked incredibly hard to earn my way back into my program while also managing to get on the dean's list a few times.

Why I ran for VP Academic

The reason I ran and currently hold this position is because I want to ensure that students, especially our 1st years, are able to access the services, supports, resources, and activities on campus so that they can focus on what they came here for, a truly great education and campus experience. However, I think that our University's recent struggles, like the pandemic and the recent job action, have exposed gaps in terms of getting students connected to all the services, resources, and support that our University and Campus Community offers to our students.

One of the things that I’m working on developing is what I'm calling a “Network of Supports for Students” which is essentially a centralized and interactive hub or portal for all the services, resources, and supports that are available to students. I’m very excited to work with the University to ensure that students can find the services, support, and resources they need when they need them.

My Responsibilities as VP Academic

As the VP Academic, I’m the official liaison between the University and every Undergraduate student on all matters academic. I’m also responsible for organizing and communicating all the committee assignments that the General Assembly (GA)  sits on at the university and faculty levels. I am also a member of the GA as well as the Executive Council (EC) as part of my role. So as a GA member I also sit on University committees as well as ULSU committees. As a member of the EC, I also help to run the day-to-day operations of the Students’ Union with the rest of the Executives.

I am also the student advocate for Grade Appeals. A large part of my role is sitting down with students and talking over grade appeals and if that's an option they want to go forward with. If they decide to go forward with the grade appeal, I am here to help and advocate during that entire process.

This year I will also be taking the lead on the Students’ Unions Mental Health initiatives with the support of the ULSU Mental Health Programming Committee, my fellow executives, and the General Assembly.

Please reach out to me if you have questions, concerns, or just need someone to talk to. I have drop-in office hours every Monday & Thursday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. I'm also available virtually if that works better for students.

My commitment to students is to listen, especially when it feels like no one else is. I am here to lift students up so they can realize their full potential and excel at the University of Lethbridge.
